Funny Things My Kids Have Said

Kids-Say-The Darndest-Things
It's been a while since I shared some of the funny things my kids have said, and if you have little ones, nieces, nephews, or spend 10 minutes around kids, then you know they come out with some pretty funny things. The best part is, it's usually unintentional because they are just learning the ropes, expanding their vocabulary, taking things literally, or getting phrases mixed up. And you know what? I'm here for it. It's those funny moments of parenting that add some comic relief in between those chaotic and crazy moments. It's always good to take some time to smile, laugh, and lighten up.

The last time I shared about some of the things my boys have said was back when I was pregnant. I was cracking up as I went back and read this. They came out with some pretty crazy things while I was pregnant and I loved hearing their little thoughts. It also made for some great memories and I can't wait to tell them some of this stuff when they're older. Here are a few things they've recently come out with...

I was recently talking to my mom about how much I love this time of year for fashion, oversized sweaters, and all the comfy clothes. I must have lost my mind for a split second and forgot that I'm a boy mom because I nonchalantly said, I love that it's bootie season! Well, wouldn't you know that my older two whipped their heads around so fast with this silly smirk on their faces, looked at each other and started cracking up, saying, booty season! Then they deiced to make jokes about it and say things like, mama, you're going to have your booty out. Booty season, why is it booty season? Do we get to take our pants off. Oh geez, the things they think are amusing. Don't worry though, I set them straight. I'm pretty confident no one will have a booty out in public. At least I can only hope.

The other day I was making eggs for breakfast and a lot of times the boys will like to help me in the kitchen. Lately A has been asking me a lot about food. What's in things, what animal is it, and so on. Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if he decides he wants to be a vegetarian one day. So anyway, I'm at my counter cracking eggs, and he asks me about the yoke and baby chickens. He then thinks he has this great idea of how a baby gets in your belly. Apparently all someone needs to do is eat a chicken egg and then you are pregnant.

You know those things you once said you would never do before you became a parent? Well, for me it was let my kids have McDonald's. Fast forward to now being a parent and a few chicken nugget happy meals later, and here we are. We don't do it often, and the boys know it's a big treat when we do, but we were recently in the drive-thru and the boys like me to pull past to their window and let them unbuckle to hang out the window and take the bags of food from the workers. As I parked the car to get them situated back in their seats, little nugget says to me, mama! Now I know where Daniel Tiger works! I said, you do? I said to him, I didn't think he worked. He said, oh yes he does. He wears the same outfit as the McDonald's people. I guess that red sweater totally means you work at McDonald's.

The batteries in our remote for the tv recently went and the boys couldn't get it to turn on. They helped themselves to our junk drawer to try and change the batteries, and while I can appreciate them being proactive, I now have no clue what batteries are good or bad, because they mixed them all together. Anyway, little nugget comes up to me and says that I need to get the tv detector. I asked him what he meant by that because I thought maybe he meant the guide on the tv (you never know how their little minds work). A confidently came over and said, no, no, no, he means the tv doctor. I quickly glanced over at the tv hoping they weren't insinuating they broke it. It looked like it was all intact and thankfully a switch of batteries fixed the whole thing.

Some of you might have seen that A lost his first tooth. There was a lot of excitement leading up to this milestone moment. It was loose for a few days before it fell out and we did ask him a lot if he wanted us to pull it, tie floss to the door knob, you know, all those tooth pulling ideas. The one night he did put floss around his tooth and tried to pull it out himself, but it still needed a little time. Little nugget came up to me and asked me, why does the sloth pull out his tooth? I said, the sloth? I honestly had no clue what he was talking about. I thought maybe I missed something and the tooth fairy was old news and now there's a sloth. But what he really meant, was floss.

I have to say, I am really proud and a bit surprised at how well they have had self control with their halloween candy. They haven't asked for it much, and if they do, it's for one piece. I can get down with that. I really think they might have been more excited to come home and sort it, than eat it. If they reached for anything in their bags it's been m&ms or nerds. Little nugget was chomping down on some when A realized he was fresh out of nerds. He asked if he could trade candy with his brother for a pack of nerves. I had to chuckle a little bit because I've never heard anyone refer to them as that, but I can see the confusion. He must have noticed that I made a reaction and said to me, what? I really like them. I said, I can see that, are nerds your favorite? He said, what's a nerd? I like the nerves. You know, like how you say things get on your nerves. I'm sure I made some goofy face and my eyes got big when he said that. Unfortunately he knows what it means to get on someone's nerves, but I also love that he has no clue what a nerd is, because nerds don't exist around here.

I've been trying to sporadically do things with the boys after school, like go to the park, go out for a treat, something out of the same normal routine. I decided we should go check out a new park but I wasn't exactly sure where it was at. I usually use Google maps for my gps but I didn't know where my phone was and wasn't going to go reaching all around while I was driving. I ended up using the gps in my car which I haven't done in awhile. Once you put in the address that you want to go to, mine will say, route guidance will now start. All of the sudden I hear cackling from the backseat with a small voice asking me, who's Ralph? I said, that's my grandpop (his name is Ralph, after all). A then says, well why is she talking about him on the radio? I was so confused for a minute. All I was trying to do was get us to the park, and apparently someone was talking about my grandpop. Wouldn't you know, route guidance is apparently Ralph guidance now. They also don't call it a gps, but ask if I need to use Ralph guidance, and I kind of like it.

Oh these silly kids. What are some funny things you've heard from little ones lately?

When Kids Say and Do The Darndest Things

It's been all kinds of months since I've shared some of the silly things that come out of the boys mouths and the crazy things they come up with. I don't know why, but recently it seems like they have been coming out with some funny ones that I've tried to add to the notes in my phone (does anyone else use the notes section in their phone) so I don't forget.

After I started reading them again, I realized there were quiet a few and thought it would be fun to put another post together. Both of my boys have been very vocal from a young again and talking in 3-4 word sentences from around 16-18 months. I am extremely thankful for that and have loved hearing their silly logic and literal thinking.

If you remember form a while back, one of little nugget's first words was agua and he was getting so mad at me for not giving it to him because I couldn't figure out what he was saying. I didn't realize how quickly he picked up on the Spanish and sign language they were teaching him in daycare. Anyway, here are a few moments from my boys that have kept me laughing.

Recently one of the things they have been asking about is when is it going to be Christmas again? I keep telling them they have so many things to look forward to this summer but Christmas is on their brain. When I was putting A to bed he asked me if we could bring out this North Pole communicator that we have so he could talk to Santa. I told him it was packed away and that it only works after Thanksgiving (true story because you can set the date and time). He leans over and says, well your ears are really small like elf ears (true in that they are small but no they are NOT elf shaped) and if I talk into them can Santa hear me? No, no, no it does not work that way my son.

Continuing with the Christmas talk, I told little nugget one night that it was going to be cold so he should wear socks to bed. He never keeps his covers on at night. Anyone else's kids always kicking them off? He says to me, why mama? So jack frost doesn't nip at my toes. I think the song actually says nose, but I can see the confusion there.

One night, I don't actually remember how it came up, but Eric and I were talking about how Jimmy Fallon's finger got hurt from his wedding band, and that whole debacle. I guess I must have said Jimmy Kimmel instead of Jimmy Fallon, and somehow A must have over heard us. Later on that night, he was crying in his room and I went in to see what was wrong with him. He said he was so upset and that he didn't want Jimmy Kimmel's finger to fall off. I had to laugh because he has no clue who either of them are and I also felt really bad that I didn't realize he was listening and I got him so upset.

I try to be very mindful of what I listen to in the car with them, because much like the Jimmy story, they pick up on everything. A Pitbull song happened to come on and he was talking about going back to the crib. Little nugget says, the crib? Why he take them back to the crib? That's for babies!

Little nugget had a project at school where they planted seeds and grew them into a bean plant (sprout, whatever you call it). They were also reading Jack In The Beanstalk. When it was time for the plant to come home, they both got the idea to plant it in the backyard and when it grew taller Jack would come out of the top. We had to explain to them that's not really how it worked but if we were lucky (we aren't exactly green thumbs over here) then maybe we would get some beans.

I need to get this on video because seriously Eric and I can barely keep a straight face when he does it, but little nugget will really talk with his hands when he gets into a story. Lately, during his story telling, if we mention something that we think is the point he is trying to make, he will tell us, yes that's what I told you. Well, it really isn't what you told us buddy but I can see where you were going with that.

A still loves wearing his Disney band from when we went and calls it his Mickey watch. He wanted to wear it to school one day so we let him. Later on that night at dinner, he tells us he has something he needs to talk to us about but he doesn't want us to get mad. I'm thinking oh geez, what is this boy going to tell us. Well, he let us know that during his time out on the playground he threw is beloved Mickey watch up in the air and it landed on the roof of the daycare. He was so concerned that not only him, but apparently none of us would be able to get back into Disney World. He assured us that his teacher was going to have one of the maintenance guys bring a ladder and get it down for him. He came home the next day with his band and says, yes!!! Now we can go to Disney again! It looks like we'll be planning another trip.

Another night when I was putting A to bed we were laying there and he asked me what season it was. I tried to explain to him that it is technically spring but it feels more like winter. He said. I know what's wrong. Spring is the mama and winter is the kid who is not being a good listener. I'd have to agree with him on that one.

When A Real Rabbit Is Just More Fun

It's that time of year again. My favorite time to take pictures of the boys. If you've been following this little space of mine for awhile now, then you know doing a photo shoot with a live Easter bunny has been my absolute favorite thing ever since little nugget's first Easter.

We didn't get to have chickens and ducks in it this time around, but the main character is the bunny, after all. Our friend who had been bringing her animals over to us the past two years moved away so our feathered and furry friends didn't get to see the boys this year.

We did however find a friend of a neighbor who had an adorable mini Rex Rabbit named Jack. We think he had a good time being the Easter bunny for the boys.

Since Easter is so early this year and we still have snow on the ground, I had to move everything inside. If there's one thing I know I'm not the greatest at, it's taking indoor pictures. It was an overcast day with peeks of the sun coming in and out, which also made it hard for me. I am very much a natural light kind of girl. It's my comfort zone and where I know my capabilities are. I do hope to expand that over time and become more confident working with indoor lighting.

On Saturday we were spoiled with a beautiful day. It was only 48 degrees out but the sun was shining and it felt more like 88 degrees. People were out riding motorcycles, driving with their convertables down, and me, well I took advantage of sitting outside and watching the boys play in the yard. I ended up drifting off to sleep in my lounge chair and Eric said he wished he would have snapped a pic of me because it looked like I was sunbathing (not really, don't worry I wasn't in my swimsuit) but with snow still on the ground. Anyway, when I woke up, he showed me this wood wall, contraption, whatever you want to call it, thing that he built. His intention was to use it as a door for one of our sheds outback. I told him not to use it yet because it was the perfect backdrop to take pictures of the boys! I was originally going to use wood pallets like I had years before, but I love how this turned out instead. Gosh I love being married to a handy guy.

I really love how the whole thing came together. I know I've mentioned this before but if I could do this on the regular I totally would. I have so much fun coming up with the decor and putting these little ideas together.

When Jack arrived the boys were so excited they started jumping up and downing and clapping their hands together. He was such a soft rabbit but an active one too. He certainly wanted to explore our little setup, and who could blame him.

He had his eye on those bails of hay, and before we knew it, he jumped up there. The boys thought it was the cutest thing and tried to feed him.

Little nugget was making the silliest faces for us and he definitely knew what he was doing. The more we would laugh and tell him to smile nice, the more he kept doing it. He's such a little ham sometimes and it's so cute to see. Looking at these pictures I just can't believe how big A is getting. He was little nugget's age when we first started this tradition and now he's looking like such a big boy.

Wouldn't know, both of them have now been asking us for a rabbit but they only want one if daddy cleans up the poop. I can't argue with them on that one, but for now, I think we're ok with having rabbit friends come visit.

7 Ways To Get Your Kids Involved With Spring Cleaning

Happy first day of spring, everyone! This time of year always gets me so excited because I live for nice days and warmer weather. Although, spring is playing some nasty tricks on us this year because they're calling for another nor'easter around here. Like seriously, get it together. The weather has to get nicer at some point, right?

It's no surprise over here that I am not the most tidy or organized person out there. I am making some great progress though and it's amazing how implementing some small changes can really make a big difference.

When I think of spring cleaning, I don't always jump to the typical mindset of cleaning every nook and cranny. I've shared before about 5 ways to spring clean your blog and 5 ways to spring clean more than just your home. This year, I decided to break away from sharing five things and got ambitious with sharing seven (I'm such a rebel) ways to get your kids involved with spring cleaning more than just their toys.

1. ORGANIZATION: decorative storage bins have been so helpful for us, especially in their play room. Even with all of our bins around, I still get asked at least once a day where one of their toys are. Somehow Moms are just supposed to magically know where everything is, right? After A had a meltdown because he couldn't find one of his beloved Paw Patrol toys, we deiced to have a designated bin for all of those specific toys so he can keep better track of them. We've also done this now with their stuffy friends and superheroes.

2. SETTING GOALS: setting goals has been a big thing in our house. We utilize an app or start charts that the boys can works towards earning things so it was the perfect time to put some goals in place for the spring.

3. MAKE CLEANING FUN: what I've learned with kids is if you make something fun or turn it into a game you are more likely to capture their attention and have them participate. They enjoy seeing who can match the most socks, using the garbage bin as a bucket and throwing things in there like a basket ball.

4. ADDING IN AN INCENTIVE: who doesn't love a little incentive for doing some extra help. My boys have really been into finding change lately so this has been a motivator for them to want pick things up. You know, in case they find some extra "monies". We may or may not leave a few coins laying around so they really think they are finding things.

5. OUTSIDE ORGANIZATION: our back door is right off of our kitchen and where majority of their outdoor toys are. Just like how they ask me where something is in the house, they'll ask about their things outside too. We use an old wash tub for them to put majority of their things in but being organized outside can also be as important as being organized inside.

6. BEING KIND: we also talked to the boys about ways they can be kind to others at school or when we are out at places. We asked them what they thought they could do and A said, he could play with someone new and share his toys, and little nugget wants me to pack extra smoothies and stickers for his best friends everyday. We're still working on him coming up with some other ideas.

7. GIVING COMPLIMENTS: The boys new thing has been coming to Eric and I and saying that one of them is lying about something or being mean to each other. Instead of allowing them to continue complaining about things (of course we also hear their thoughts and let them work it out) but we also follow up with having them give each other a compliment or say something nice about each other.

Preparing Your Kids to Travel

Preparing Your Kids To Travel
If you haven't noticed I'm pretty excited about our upcoming family vacation. Traveling has always been a love of mine and I hope to pass that excitement down to my boys. I never wanted us to be a family that says, Oh we haven't been anywhere in years.

I know everyone's situations and priorities are different, but for me I would rather have experiences and memories than collecting things.

In previous years I shared tips for traveling with a toddler and what to pack in your beach bag. For the most part our packing style is still the same. Now with two little nuggets I am taking a different approach with how we are preparing them for travel.

We've been flying with A since he was 7 months old, and to be honest, it was so much easier when he was a baby. I would nurse him for takeoff and landing and then he would pretty much sleep the rest of the flight. On our last family vacation I was probably out of my seat most of the flight walking up and down the aisles with them. I can only image how this flight will be, and with a layover none of the less. I need all the mama prayers I can get.

With the logistics of the trip aside, here's a look at a few ways we've been preparing the boys for travel...

CANDID CONVERSATIONS: we've been talking to both of them a lot about how we are going to get on an airplane, go to an Island, and the process of everything in between. Now that A is even older he asks a lot of questions. Mainly questions about the plane, particularly to takeoff and landing. I think it's important to let them know what to expect and give them as much detail as possible—of course within reason.

SHOWING THEM PICTURES: we've been showing them pictures of previous trips and reminding them of how we traveled before and all the fun we had. It blows my mind that A still remembers feeding the Iguanas in Aruba. We've also been showing them pictures of where we will be going and what the hotel looks like. This has gotten them really excited to check out some of the amenities and sleep in the big bed.

INVOLVING THEM IN PACKING: this has probably been the biggest help with getting them ready to travel. It allows them to make decisions about what they want to bring along, picking out toys to play with, snacks to pack, etc. I promise, there are clothes in the bottom of their suitcase but their toys had to be on top so they know they are in there.

GEOGRAPHY: both of the boys have globes in their rooms that they are familiar with. Little nuggets we actually picked up on our trip to the Dominican. For the past few nights they've been taking out their globes and asking us to show them the country we are traveling to and where the airplane will be flying over. This probably isn't the most effective thing for a younger child since you can see my little nugget was more interested in licking the globe and pretending like it was a giant lollipop. A on the other hand keeps looking at his globe everyday and asking what other countries we are visiting next.

EXPLORING CULTURE: we've also been talking to them about different cultures and how people all around the world speak different languages and may eat different foods. We're trying to prepare them for new sounds and sights they might see.

I'll be taking a little break from blogging to enjoy our time together as a family. I do have a fun Friday Favorites previously planned so you might want to check that out. I might be sharing a few things here and there on instagram (@beautifully_candid) if you'd like to follow along for the fun. Overall I'll be disconnecting for a few days and enjoying some sand and sun. Looking forward to catching up with everyone when we get back!

Healthy Fall Treats For Toddlers

Until recently my little guy was always a great eater. It's like he knows he's now one and transitioned out of that baby phase into toddlerhood. Slow down buddy, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Even though he doesn't really understand fall and the upcoming holiday season I still want to include him in on the fun.

I took some of his favorite foods that I know he will eat and added a fall twist to them. We recently went apple picking so making apple sauce was a no brainer. I added Strawberries and his not so favorite Spinach, and you know what? He loved both of them!

Stawberry Apple Sauce
Ingredients:
2 large apples
4 medium sized strawberries

Directions:
Peel apples and boil in a medium sauce pan until apples are soft. Cut the tops off of stawberries. In a blender or food processor (we used the baby bullet) blend apples and strawberries.

Spinach Apple Sauce
Ingredients:
2 large apples
1/2 cup of spinach leaves, fresh or frozen

Directions:
Peel apples and boil in a medium sauce pan until apples are soft. Boil spinach leaves with apples. If using fresh they will be ready really quickly. Add to boiling water and let boil for about 2-3 minute. Drain and add both apples and spinach to a blender or food processor. Blend together.

My little guy loves fruit. Well most fruits. I saw a lot of different twists on healthier candy corn floating around out there but you know what, my little guy isn't loving pineapple and oranges just yet, so I went with what I knew he would love. Fall fruit and yogurt parfait with banana and cantaloupe.

Ingredients:
1 medium sized banana
1/4 of cantaloupe
1/3 cup of vanilla yogurt (we used organic baby yogurt)

Directions:
Slice bananas and cantaloupe. Fill bottom of bowl with cantaloupe, layer with banana, add yogurt on top.

My little guy would seriously eat a whole block of cheese if we let him (he takes after his mother). This is definitely a little cheesy (pun intended :) but instead of using cookie cutters for what they are made for, cookies, we put them to work on a slab of cheese. And there you have it a cheesekin! And kind of modified because out cutter was a little bigger than the slab of cheese.

Cheesekin
Ingredients:
Block cheese
Fall cookie cutters

Directions:
Slice a large piece of cheese from a cheese block. This will depend on the size of your cookie cutter. Mine was actually to large for the standard size block cheese that I had so I improvised and cut it in pieces.

Happy fall everyone and I hope your little eaters aren't becoming as picky as mine.

Off He Goes-First Steps

It happened. My little man is on the go! It's been about three weeks now that he picked up, took his first few steps, and pretty much hasn't sat down. I am excited. I am proud. I am also a little nervous. These little legs and feet have so much exploring and learning to do. But, I also have a big job of trying to protect him as much as possible. I know there are going to be falls, and bumps, and bruises...it's inevitable. In fact, we've already encountered a few. I guess it's never to early for that, right? Yesterday he made his way over to a dirt pile that the dog decided to dig, stomped in the dirt, stumbled over and then began to eat the dirt off of the bottom of his shoes. Lord help me.

If you caught our Friday Favorites posts you might have seen I've already had a mommy fail moment when it comes to remembering his shoes. If worrying about diapers, food, and everything else isn't enough, I now have to remember his shoes. My little guy has never been big on wearing shoes. We had a few cute slip on pairs that we would put him in that lasted all of about five minutes. He would rub his feet together until they fell off and that would be the end of that. No big deal we'll just put socks on him. Well, that lasts maybe two minutes until he pulls them off and tries to hide them. He loves bare feet. I don't blame him. But, where we live the change of seasons is just not going to cut it. Thankfully his first pair of walking shoes have been a hit and he hasn't figured out how to undo the velcro...just yet.

For now we are going to embrace the falls and stumbles, understand that he is going to get into things, ok more like everything. We are going to enjoy his new milestone and continue to be in awe of our little guy.

Monday is mommy moments...here's where we are linking.

Nap Time-When Is One Nap Appropriate?

Nap time, a time for our little ones to rest and recoup. Ok, who are we kidding? It's kind of music to our ears to be able to catch our breath, go to the bathroom, and maybe have a little something to eat. However, transitioning over into just one nap a day can be rough. I am writing this post in hopes that I can learn from some of you great moms out there who may have experienced a similar situation or have some insight you can provide.

My son recently transitioned over into the one year old class at his daycare. He is still 11 months (will be a year in a few weeks) but the way his birthday falls he made the cut off to move into the next class. Everything else in his class seems to be going great except for one thing, nap time. He is used to having a morning and afternoon nap but in his new class they have all the kids take one long afternoon nap. This works great for many of them but doesn't seem to be cutting it for my little guy. The past week and a half has been a big challenge for us. He is so tired and cranky when we bring him home that our short time we get to spend with him hasn't been as enjoyable as we would like. I realized that I only get about 3 and half waking hours with my son during each work day, that sucks! I want those few short hours to be filled with fun and love.

I did meet with his teachers and the director of the daycare who were more than accommodating to work with our needs and what is best for our son. We also try to mirror his daycare schedule on the weekends so he isn't thrown off and that it's consistent for everyone. We have noticed that prior to the switch, his afternoon nap is becoming much shorter than it usually was and not by anyone's fault, just him waking up on his own. There is so much information to read online about nap time theories and when it's best to switch from two naps to one. Ultimately I know that as his Mom I am going to make the best decision for him, but I would love to hear your own experiences and when you felt the best time to switch to one nap was right for your child?

The Life Of Faith

The First 9 Months

9 months...where has the time gone? I was always told that time goes by so quickly when you have a child and they grow up so fast. I thought to myself, of course time goes by quickly, it's a fact of life, people grow up and get older. These statements are so true and something I would have never fully grasped until my little guy was here. I want to share my experiences, emotions, and fun facts from the first 9 months of being a mom. I have to admit, I almost feel bad writing this and was hesitant at first. I know there are so many mom's out there who have it really difficult and face a lot of trying times with their babies. My experiences haven't been all roses and lullabies, but it has been nothing like I imagined and so much easier than I could have dreamed it would be. One of the reasons my sister and I started this blog was to share our experiences with our readers, so here it goes.

I feel incredibly blessed to be going through this experience as a first time mom with such an amazing baby who has eased a lot of my fears and given me the confidence I needed to know that I can do this. I was never one of those women who would look at another pregnant woman and think, oh how beautiful. I would actually think, that sucks, she must be uncomfortable, I can only pray I'm not a walking house. Thankfully, and by the grace of God, I had an amazing pregnancy and wonderful birthing experience (maybe I will share that some day).

These first 9 months have been some of the best experiences of my life and have allowed me to experience a love that is indescribable. Before my little man got here, I would hear all of the horror stories, the sleepless nights (which we've actually never experienced), how people haven't been on vacation in years, and how your life pretty much stops after you have a child. Yikes! What fun is that and what are we getting ourselves into? I always wanted children but I was still selfish in a way. I didn't want to have to put everything or my life on hold. That's the thing, it doesn't have to be that way. What it comes down to is the experience you want to have as a parent. I'm at a point in my life where majority of my friends are having babies. Yes, some babies can be more difficult than others and are harder to handle, but it's also how you react to the situation.

Unsure of what my husband and I were fully getting into we knew from the start we needed to be on the same page and a support to each other. Leaving the hospital with our little guy we both looked at each other with this puzzled gaze, wondering, what do we do now? This tiny bundle of joy, with a great head of hair, was now our responsibility. Not having our family close by we knew we were going to be doing a lot of this on our own. The first few months were a lot of diaper changing (getting peed on), nursing, and feeling so connected to our little man that loved to nap in our arms. I on the other hand, was still recovering from a vaginal delivery, which no one really tells you about the aftermath (maybe I'll share that one day too). Our little man was always such a great sleeper and we took full advantage of that.

Maybe we are a little over ambitious, but within his first two weeks we visited a local outdoor farmers market, attempted our own newborn photo shoot, and had our first date night. We traveled with him on an airplane at 7 months and have gone on two family weekend getaways.

In no way am I trying to make it seem like we have it all figured out, believe me we don't. But, what I can say is, it's not all crazy pull your hair out moments and massive sleep deprivation. I think that a lot of those stories actually held me back from taking the leap and allowing myself to get really excited about the thought of having a child. I want to shed a little light for those who may be on the fence or have only heard the crazy stories. Can they happen, absolutely! Is every baby a menace, highly doubtful. Don't get me wrong, I've had my moments and I'm sure there are many more to come. The first week of breastfeeding was a big challenge and I almost gave up. Looking back now I am so happy I stuck it out, 9 months later we are still going strong. I have a lot of guilt about being back at work and him being in daycare. That has been the biggest challenge for me and has also taught me more about time management than any of my college classes ever offered. Some days I feel like super mom and others I feel like no matter what I do it just isn't enough. We are learning from each other every day and are so thankful for the gift God has given us.

Now on to some mommyhood facts...

1-3 months: Getting to know our little man. Massive amounts of diaper changing, outfit changes, napping and feeding. Smiles, tummy time, and exploration with shapes, sounds, and colors.
3-6 months: Little personality! Smiling, giggling, gripping things, sitting up, and blowing raspberries. He noticed the dog (his brother) who has become a source of entertainment for him. Everything is da da. Introduction to solids (I've been making all of his baby food).
6-9 months: Oh so curious! On the move, crawling all around, dancing, and pulling himself up. First two teeth make an appearance (teething was not all that bad, but he did get a fever right before they broke through). Introduction to teething wafers and more solid/finger food.

I've never had my hair pulled so much by tiny little fingers. It is now exciting to wear my hair up.
Wearing jewelry has taken a back seat, unless it's unbreakable bracelets.
Breastfeeding and making your own baby food is a labor of love.
Getting a little one to keep socks or shoes on is close to impossible.
Baby Einstein movies have been a life savor and I don't feel as guilty because he's learning.
I've heard old macdonald more times than I ever could have imagined. We're starting to run out of animals for the farm!
They don't need a ton of toys. He usually wants the most random things that you would never think of. A bag of croutons, who knew!
They put everything in their mouths (at least my little guy does), there's no leaving my flip flops out anymore.
They may be little but they are fast!
Tantrums happen, that's just the way it is, but if you usually do something bizarre they forget why they are crying.
I've never sang so much in my life and usually catch myself singing the most absurd things...the words that come out just so they rhyme!
I've now become a permanent jungle gym.
A mesh teething bag with frozen fruit has been the only teether he will use, and he is in love with it.
Thankfully we found this out a few weeks in...the onesies with the lap shoulders can be used to slide down the body instead of pulling over the head when accidents happen! It won't prevent them from happening but it sure helps with clean up.

Summer Activities For Babies

Summer is hands down one of our favorite seasons, just the thought of it gets us excited! We've decided to take advantage of the nice weather and put together a list of summer activities to do with your little one. This doesn't have to be for just mom's and babies, but for dad's and aunties too, or maybe you are a nanny or summer camp worker that could find some of these suggestions useful.

As a first time mom with a little boy who is gaining more and more energy and constantly wanting to explore things, I often think to myself, how in the world am I going to keep him occupied or make sure he is getting the stimulation he needs. He is only 8 months, and when researching, it was hard to find activities for babies under one. This is our first summer together and a learning experience for both of us. I wanted to share some fun activities that have kept him occupied thus far, allowed us to enjoy the warmer weather, and have only made our mother and son bond stronger. I have tried to incorporate several sensory activities so that while he is playing he is still learning.

I'm continually looking to grow my list of activities and definitely don't have it all figured out yet. One of the biggest supports as a first time mom is partnering with other mom's and sharing experiences and ideas. If you have some fun activities that your little ones enjoy I would love to hear them!

First Trip Away

You may have noticed that it's been almost a week since we've posted anything. If you are a frequent visitor, we thank you for that! Both of us have had a lot going on the past week. For anyone who is a blogger, I'm sure you can relate that blogging takes a lot of work! It's not that we aren't making this a priority, but I guess you could say that life just got in the way. On that note, as the sister who is a first time mom, I wanted to share my first time being away from our little guy and my travel experience with you.

Luckily I was away celebrating an event for one of my best friends so this made it a little bit easier, but still hard none of the less. After I left work last week I stopped by my sons daycare to feed him and say my last goodbye. It was one of the hardest moments I have encountered since being a mom. I knew this day would come eventually but it just felt so soon. When I got in my car I ended up crying halfway through my drive. It was tears of sadness, feeling like my little boy was getting too big too fast, tears that I won't be able to kiss him good night for a few days or see his bright big smile every morning, and tears of knowing I need to be able to let go a little. Once I got that out of my system I tried to give myself a pep talk and reassure myself that it's ok to take time for myself.

Since I am still breastfeeding this was one of my main concerns about being away. I heard stories from friends who had issues when they returned from trips. They saw a decrease in their milk supply and their children having to readjust to feeding again. I was just hoping and praying I wouldn't have any issues. I made a promise to myself that no matter what was going on, or where we were at on this trip, I would do my best to make sure I pumped when I needed to. I have to say, I think I did a very good job at making that a priority without interfering with anyone else's time.

If you've every felt out of place pumping at work, pumping on an airplane is a whole new experience. Our flight there was later at night so it was dark and majority of passengers were sleeping. This made it a little easier to do what needed to be done (5 and a half hour flight, there was no way of getting around it) but it was still awkward. Don't worry I was covered up! The flight home was even more of a challenge. It was first thing in the morning, the plane was bright, and I felt like all eyes were on me. I know they weren't and it was all in my head, but it still felt odd. Regardless, my own personal insecurities needed to take a back seat to the success of me continuing to breastfeed.

While it was nice to be away for a few days and celebrate with great friends, my longing to give my little guy a big hug and a kiss never went away. Although, I did surprise myself at how I handled things and really did enjoy myself. At first, I thought I would be the one to spend half of the time crying in the bathroom and being upset, but it was just the opposite. Modern technology made it a little easier to be able to video call and still see my little guy. I also had this peace about me. I knew that he was in great hands and that my husband was taking the best care of him. Some people couldn't believe that he didn't have "help" there with him. I trust my husband a 100% with him and never had a thought or worry that he wouldn't know what to do in a situation with him. My husband has always been a very hands on dad, and for that I am truly blessed.

After returning home and sitting in over 2 hours of traffic to make it back to our house, my reuniting with my little family was amazing. My husband was waiting at the front door with our little guy and our dog. As I got out of my car I was greeted with the biggest smiles, hugs and kisses, and yes even doggy kisses. It was a great feeling to be with them again and it gives a whole new meaning to the saying...there's no place like home :)

Not Your Typical Diaper Bag...For Mom & Dad

For some reason deciding on what my "diaper bag" would be was a really tough decision. I love MY bags and think that it can be one of your greatest accessories...but a diaper bag? Ah, I just couldn't bring myself to do the typical diaper bag. Now, for those of you who chose to carry a typical diaper bag there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, it just wasn't for me. Mainly because I couldn't find one that I liked. They were so oversized with the trendy chevron pattern or bright colors with little animals on them or paisley looking flowers and I just couldn't see that as MY every day bag. Ok, so maybe I've been a little selfish with this whole diaper bag thing. But here's my thinking, I've never been the type of girl to carry multiple bags. I can barely remember to grab my cell phone when I am walking out of the house so why do I want to remember more than I have to. I wanted something that was still stylish, that could go with my every day attire, yet hold all of the things I now need for my little guy. My husband also carries around a book bag or messenger bag for when I am not around. It's simple and works for him. I wanted to share with you what I have been toting around, how it has worked for me, and a personal look at the inside of MY diaper bag.

Be sure to check out our Parenthood page for more detailed information of what's in my bag!

Happy Feet

Good morning and Happy Presidents Day! Hopefully some of you are lucky enough to have off today and enjoy an extended weekend, or may be you are like us and have to be at work or class today (stomp our feet, why can't we be lucky? Ugh this stinks!). Regardless, we hope that the start of your week is off to a good one.

As I woke up this morning my little man greeted me with his bright smiling face, melts my heart every time! I fed him and began to get myself ready for the day. My husband woke up and played with him while I finished getting ready. Three outfit choices later, my decision ended with my gray dress, argyle stockings and Enzo Angiolini heels. I made my way over to the mirror and began to apply my makeup. I caught myself looking in the mirror at my son and husband interacting on our bed, and I could have fallen in love all over again. A few raspberry noises later accompanied with some drool, I see my son stick his little foot in his mouth. He picks his head up and has the biggest grin on his face as if this was a thought out task he wanted to accomplish for quite sometime. I'm so happy I got to share this little milestone moment with him. It made leaving for work even more difficult but the replay of the memory continues to bring a smile to my face. Of course Auntie was the first one to hear about it and share in the joy.
